Listen.Play.Grow
Artist Volunteer Project
During a local annual Detroit Music Festival, the production sponsors community outreach projects with an emphasis on art & music culture. This project was inspired by the way children engage and interact with their built environment through play. The main apparatus, the dream music lounge, is where one child can sit & listen to sound while another plays music/sound through the integrated tubes along the side. With this organ-like design, the tubes reverberate different sound qualities based on varying tube lengths. The accessory element, the rain-maker see-saw, the tubes are filled with dried beans & rice and enclosed to emulate the sound of rain as the children play. And again using tube length variability to create different sound qualities. During implementation, we noticed that children were excited by the sounds & their curiosity was peaked to entice an even greater sense of wonder. Mission accomplished.
